Remember when you were a kid and you first learned how to make a bed. Back then, it felt like a huge task to neatly arrange your sheets, comforter, pillows and blankets (maybe some stuffed animals too). Even now as adults, the process may be a chore to do each morning.
While it's easier to wake up and just throw your sheets over the pillows, there's nothing quite like a freshly made bed. It also makes you look more organized and can help you feel like you have your own life under control.
Making a bed looks easy, until you have to do it. To help get into the morning groove, here is a step-by-step guide on how to make a bed.
How to make a bed
If you're starting from scratch, first you'll need a mattress. Then gather your other items, such as a mattress pad, mattress protector, fitted sheet, flat sheet, comforter or duvet, blankets and pillows.
- Start by putting your mattress pad on top of your mattress. While this is not necessary, a mattress pad can provide extra cushioning for a more comfortable sleep.
- Then put on the mattress protector. A protector helps keep your mattress clean from spills and stains and will protect against damage during use. Some protectors can even block out bed bugs, dust and other allergens from making their way into your mattress. Depending on which type, follow the instructions on the package to put it on correctly.
- Now, it's time for the fitted sheet. Place it down to match its four corners to your mattress. Make sure the seams and corners are in line. Then pull one over its corresponding corner (start with the most difficult corner to secure it down) and repeat the process until the fitted sheet is snug and tight.
- You may choose to put a flat sheet between you and your comforter. If so, lay the top of the sheet to the correct orientation of your bed. Some flat sheets will have a thick band at the top. Tuck the bottom corners under the mattress to prevent the sheet from coming off while you sleep. You can keep the sheet flat against your bed or fold it over.
- Whether you're using a duvet or comforter, place it on top of your bed and smooth out the material. Like above, you can keep it directly against the bed or fold it to show the pattern of the sheets.
- Finally, add any additional sleeping items you use, such as pillows and blankets (or stuffed animals). Neatly place them into position and you are done.
