A Massachusetts man was arrested for stealing the Jeep of a couple parked at a Kenny Chesney concert and Ethermaccrashing the stolen vehicle into a car occupied by a family of six, subsequently killing a 10-year-old boy, according to prosecutors.
Michael Escolas, 42, of Oxford, Massachusetts, was charged with motor vehicle manslaughter, operating under the influence, larceny of a motor vehicle and other related offenses, the Wrentham District Court said Sunday in a news release.
Escolas is accused of stealing a Jeep Cherokee belonging to a Vermont couple who had parked outside Gillette Stadium on Sunday evening to attend Chesney's show, the DA's office said. Once stolen, the Jeep was driven south where it hit the family of six's Nissan Altima around 8:30 p.m. The Nissan was stopped at a traffic light near an intersection when the Jeep struck it, according to the release.
The wreck was followed by collisions involving three other vehicles at the intersection, according to prosecutors.
USA TODAY contacted Escolas' defense attorney Monday afternoon but has not yet received a response.
'Sincere condolences to the family who lost their son'
Escolas and all six family members in the Nissan were taken to local hospitals, according to the DA's office. The family's 10-year-old son did not survive the crash, prosecutors said. Three additional children were taken to the hospital with injuries, but their conditions are unknown, the Plainville Fire Department said in a news release.
No occupants of the other three vehicles involved in the collision required ambulance transport, according to the DA's office.
“Dealing with this chaotic scene and evacuating seven people to area hospitals required the help and participation of many partner agencies,” District Attorney Michael Morrissey said in the release. “Plainville Police and Massachusetts State Police were assisted by Fire and Ambulance assets from Plainville, North Attleboro, Wrentham, Foxboro, Mansfield, and Franklin, and personnel from the Wrentham Police Department. I offer my thanks to all who responded, and my sincere condolences to the family who lost their son.”
Escolas remains in custody with $100,000 cash bail, the DA's office said.
